IOM programme to resettle Bhutanese refugees reaches milestone

More than half of the 120,000 Bhutanese refugees living in Nepal have been resettled in other countries, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on Friday.

The resettlement progamme reached the 75,000 mark this week when a six year old refugee flew to a new home in Pennsylvania in the eastern United States.

Chris Lom is the IOM spokesperson in Geneva.

“The resettlement programme for Bhutanese refugees in Nepal has now hit the 75,000 mark and that is more than half the roughly 120,000 Bhutanese of Nepali origin who have been living in eastern Nepal for the last 20 years or so. And based on UNHCR figures, we believe that something like another 30,000 of them will want to be resettled.” (Duration: 26 secs)

IOM started the programme in 2007 and most of those resettled now live in the United States. Other countries which have accepted Bhutanese refugees include Australia, Canada, Denmark and New Zealand.

The agency has also assisted 270 Filipino migrant workers in Syria to return home on Thursday, via Lebanon.

Chris Lom explained that as the airport in the Syrian capital, Damascus, is closed, the migrants travelled by bus to Lebanon where they boarded flights to their homeland.
